Robert Durkin Visits 10th Grade ELA

Our 10th Grade ELA class has been composing our own Memoirs in class as part of a follow up to our reading of Hole in My Life by Jack Gantos.

"A memoir, by turns harrowing and hilarious, about a huge mistake." --Miami Herald

We began writing our memoirs in our class and took a close look at the Writing Process, from Pre Writing, to Drafting, to Editing and even Peer Editing, to finally, publishing. Some of the student pieces will be published based on whether or not the student would like it to be published.

Interestingly, in class one day, Charlie Margaritis mentioned that his uncle, Robert Durkin, is a published writer himself. He writes a very popular column for the Press and has also published memoirs himself.

I contacted him and asked him to come to class and teach the students a creative writing lesson that fit with what we are writing, memoirs. He brought in some published selections from writers like Frank McCourt, Phillip Shultz, and Piri Thomas.

His lesson was poignant and many students were all ears! If you were in class for that lesson, please leave a comment here about what you gleaned from that lesson.
