Literacy Meets Technology is a blog for teachers and educators who are interested in seeing how technology can play an instrumental role in literacy instruction and development at the middle school and high school levels.
Okay, here's what I think is going on:
ReplyDeleteA large part of it is certainly trying to learn more about Steinbeck himself. By following the accounts in "Travels With Charley", Steigerwald is essentially putting himself in Steinbeck's place, where he could more easily work out details the book leaves out (or changes, as explained in a few posts).
There may also be another reason for why Steigerwald would embark on this journey, perhaps just as important. Like Steinbeck fifty years earlier, Steigerwald may very well be looking to find something about himself or others. Such a trip is naturally accomodating of interactions with the common people (and so "reconnecting" with the "real" America); he may be following in Steinbeck's tracks in this regard as well.

ReplyDeleteI think why he followed in the path of Steinbeck's because he wanted to see what it was like and see if anything has changed in those years. Maybe some of the roads he traved on aren't there anymore or perhaps the builings he visited are not there anymore or have been renovated. I guess he just wanted to say that he was in Steinbeck's shoes for a while so to speak.
I love these comments! I think both of you are right! Nick - thinking about how he may have wanted to see how things have changed was most likely a big part of his motivation. Korrey - I love your thought about reconnecting with the real America! I am almost certain that was a motivation as well!
ReplyDeleteBryan- I think that the reason that this man followed the path of steinbeck is to get a better understanding of his journey. Aslo because he wanted to be known as someone who re traced his steps long after it was done the first time.
ReplyDeleteBrett Listl- I believe that Steinbeck made this journey to obtain a greater knowledge of what happened in the story. He would see the storyline through a first person's perspective. Lastly he would be able to see if much had changed in the area.
ReplyDeleteMatias Ruiz-
ReplyDeleteI think that Steigerwald would trace Steinbeck in his journey to see what it would be like to kind of be in Steibecks shoe's and see what Steinbeck was seeing. I think that he was really interested in Steinecks book "Travels with Charley" so he wanted to experience it for himself. But it could also be he just wants to do it because he wants to see what he can get out of the journey and see if it could change his life in someway.
